Non-operative Treatment of Children with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Using the Boston Brace: A Case Study

Michelina C. Cassella, PT

Orthotic management to halt curve progression has proved to be effective in the treatment of children with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Professionals frequently refer to brace management as conservative treatment and surgery as aggressive treatment.

However, patients and families undergoing a bracing program often describe the program at least initially, as extremely aggressive and stressful. A dedicated professional team involved in managing patients who have been selected to undergo a bracing program can help to make the end result of the program both positive and successful.

Section I of this article will briefly review orthotic design and principles. Section II will describe the course of treatment to a sixteen-year-old female from onset of diagnosis, to near treatment completion.
